My baby is growing up

3 years ago today, I gave birth to our second little girl, Lucy,  and our lives changed in an incredible way.

Lucy is so kind-hearted, so easygoing, strong-willed but not as much as her sister,  smart, curious, and she brings such joy to our lives. She has always been an excellent eater, a (mostly) great sleeper, and her love for others and for books is immeasurable. She is very affectionate and compassionate. She adores her big sister, and I think the feeling is pretty mutual. She has the most beautiful smile and a wonderful laugh. She likes to take care of her stuffed animals and I swaddle her stuffed hedgehog for her almost every day. When Lucy was born, Molly told us that Lucy's favourite colour was orange but now Lucy is old enough to have her own opinion, and her favourite colour is red ("the same as Daddy's!") She loves to sing, and some of her favourite songs are Wheels on the Bus, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Row, Row, Row your Boat. Lucy's  favourite books these days are Love You Forever, Slinky Malinky, the cat books, Step Outside, and many, many more. Her favourite show is Paw Patrol, by a long shot (unfortunately Molly is outgrowing it!) She is fearless and determined.

Here's a cute recent video of her.

We are blessed to be her parents and to have her complete our family.

We are celebrating with an afternoon off today at the indoor playground, a small party with family tomorrow, and lots of balloons. I'm going to ask her some questions on video today to commemorate this day & I will try to share that next week!! :)

Now I'm off to make a paw patrol cake...wish me luck! I am feeling a bit bittersweet about my baby becoming a preschooler but overall I am just so enjoying this phase of life with my two girls. Happy 3rd birthday Lucy!

Have a great weekend, everyone :)

Life Lately

Wearing Red in support of the fallen RCMP officers in Moncton last week
My two girls are both doing great. Molly is a wonderful child and I am feeling blessed to have this time with her at home at this age. However, she is also a very active child and she is curious which means that she is constantly chattering, singing and asking questions (this is NOT a bad thing but if I haven't had coffee yet and I was up all night, my patience can run thin ;)). Her favourite question is a variation of "what". For instance, if I tell Molly that we're going to a store, she will say "what kind of store?" or I tell her that we're going to play a game, she says "what kind of game?" or "what colour is it?" or something like that. It is hilarious and she gets so excited when we're going to Sobeys for groceries. Overall, she still desperately loves her little sister and she especially loves to make her smile. She also loves to comb her hair (gently) :). She started playing soccer this summer (See photo below) which has been great fun so far. I love watching the two of them together, and I am feeling so happy that our family has this beautiful additional member.

Rocking Heidi braids a la What I Wore

Happy to be seeing the world from this angle :)
Lucy is a sweet baby who is already adored by all of our family and friends. She is still eating well and gaining weight - she is also over the 100th percentile for height (25 inches at 2 months) so she is mostly wearing 6-9 month clothing. She is starting to sleep for longer stretches at night most of the time, but some days she does not nap well. I find that the days where she naps for a 2-3 hour stretch are so much more relaxing because I can get cleaning done, or I can grab a quick shower with Molly right outside the door watching 3 wheels on the bus Youtube videos...or I can play outside with Molly ETC ETC. On some days, Lucy will only sleep for small snippets of time during the day and it is much more draining for me because I have to constantly console or feed her. However, overall, things are great and I can't complain because she is a very happy and content baby who is anxious to explore the world around her. She is fascinated by mobiles (we have one with bears that moves) and likes to play on her playmat or observe things overhead such as hanging toys or the ceiling fan. She is not fantastic at taking her bottle (expressed milk if I am away from her) but I hope she will get better at that. She also won't really take a soother yet, so we might just not bother with it. She is outgrowing her bassinet so we will be moving her into her crib in her own room in the next couple of weeks sometime (this kind of stresses me out but I know she will be fine and might even sleep better ;)).

Big smiles :)

2 months old May 31

The end of May until mid June is HUGE for celebrations in our family - Brian's dad has a birthday, then Brian's birthday June 5, our anniversary June 9, his brother's birthday June 14 and then Father's Day yesterday. I feel like I need a break from all the celebrating ;). Brian turned 30 this year which he was unhappy about (haha) but I think he is coping OK now. We went out for all-you-can-eat sushi for our anniversary while my mother in law watched the girls and it was great but we stuffed ourselves too much!!!

With the warmer weather, we are getting outside for walks a lot more frequently. I still usually walk with Lucy in the Ergo carrier and Molly in the stroller unless it is a shorter distance and Molly walks. I want to try Molly in the ergo on my back and Lucy in the stroller sometime because Lucy gets extremely warm in the Ergo and I can't really take her out if we reach a destination (i.e. playground) and she is asleep. Molly also really likes to "do exercises" with me in the mornings. I usually do 20 mins of HIIT with her and she is great - she loves to do jumping jacks and jogging in place and boxing moves etc. I also made her a set of "weights" last week with wooden sticks from the dollar store and pieces of a pool noodle:

I have been running a few times when Brian gets home from work at 3:30 before supper and that feels great, but I really need to get my fitness level back up. Now that I'm getting a bit more sleep some nights, I definitely feel like I can make this more of a priority.

Overall, when I get "free time" (such as right now), I have a list of 800 things that I want to get done (most of which involve organizing each room of our house now that I am in them all daily), but today I wanted to drop in here and blog a bit. Although I'm unsure where the blog is headed, I still want to record how things are going so that I can look back on it. I also want to get some of my planned posts up and write about some other interesting things happening these days :) I even have a fun recipe or two that I can share someday if I get the time.

So, in a nutshell, life is great here and I am very happy living it. I am also debating sharing my blog with our family and friends (most do not know about it at the moment), but I want to read through all of my old posts first. (Yes, I realize that anyone can find it at any time, but I doubt they would happen upon it unless directed to it!)

Until next time (whenever that is)...

Dropping in on a Friday again :)

Hi there!!

I have finally come to terms with the fact that I just won't be blogging regularly for a little while longer. I am still reading all of my favourite blogs and trying to comment when something resonates with me, but it has been hard to keep up. Shannon over at Life After "I Dew" wrote a post this week that really describes how I feel...basically when I have free time, blogging is not a priority. I am either doing a fun craft with Molly, cooking, cleaning or organizing our house, or sleeping (usually at about 8:30-9pm every night, HAHA). It might be better someday, but I'm not sure. I am trying to keep a personal journal going just so that I can remember these days and some of the things we have done.

Anyway, I do have some favourites to share this week to link up with Amanda at Meet at the Barre!! I love her Friday posts SO much...I always end up finding a good recipe and some good music and laugh at her funnies ;)

Favourite Pics of my Girls:

Big Sister/Little Sister :)

Favourite Recent Recipe:
Last weekend I made this delicious vegetarian chili (added lentils to make it thicker too) and this very yummy cornbread. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures, but we all enjoyed it and Brian doesn't typically like meatless chili so I was impressed!!!

Favourite New Music:
Coldplay's new album Ghost Stories...especially A Sky Full of Stars

Favourite Show that Molly has been watching:
The Hive, which is a British show on Netflix about a family of bees. Ahhh so cute!! See?

Favourite Show We've been Watching:
Still Homeland. We just finished Season 3 and Season 4 isn't out until October. What an amazing series!!! Now we're watching old episodes of House on Netflix :)

Favourite LOL this week:

Favourite new purchase:
We technically got them for free, but Brian and I both got new cell phones this week. Sony Xperia Z1s. They are awesome so far, but I'm still figuring it out a bit. They are similar to our Samsung phones since they are both Androids, but the Xperia has some pretty cool features.

Favourite recent read:
One More thing, by BJ Novak of the Office fame (Ryan on The Office). It's a collection of short stories - so I haven't finished it but I have gotten into some of the stories and it's very entertaining so far!

Favourite Mommy Lifehack:
In the mid-morning when Lucy is napping, Molly watches 4 2-minute clips on Youtube (Wheels on the Bus x2, Row Row Row your Boat and Hickory Dickory Dock [my fave]) and I get to shower with the door open 10 feet away. Works out great for both of us ;) Another great Mommy lifehack: Molly and I "work out" together - doing HIIT for 20 mins and some strength training. She loves to jump around to the music I put on! :)

Favourite Newly Discovered Blogs:
Kids Activities Blog - amazing resources for keeping kids entertained and educated!
Lindsay's List - some great posts about being a mother & fitting it all in!

Favourite recent life moments:
1) Brian is a diehard Habs fan so Molly has been wearing her Habs hairclips and t-shirt all this week to support his hockey team in the playoffs. She is obsessed.
2) Lucy is smiling these days! I love it!
3) Molly had a little bout of Hand Foot and Mouth disease and I caught it too but we are all seemingly on the mend now :)
4) My sister graduated from Med school yesterday and won an award! I'm so proud of her!!
5) And here's Molly's contribution to this post: aaaaaaa ("I push A!")

Check out all the other Friday Favourites here! BTW I love how I spell favourites the Canadian way for an American link up ;) Oh well!! Potato, potato! ;)

Hope all the Americans out there have a great long weekend...ours was last weekend but since I am home everyday and Brian has to go into work that day to meet a deadline, it was pretty normal around here for us ;)

Humpday Confessions: New Baby edition

I've meant to join this link up with fellow Canadian (and awesome blogger) Kathy at Vodka and Soda for ages now, and it seems like today is finally the day for me!! Lucy is napping and Molly is enthralled with Sesame Street, so it's my blogging time for the day!! :)

I have a few recent confessions most of which are related to having a new baby in the family ;)

---> First of all...I confess that at least 2 days in the last week I have forgotten to brush my teeth until supper time. One day I even flossed and then got distracted by a crying baby and forgot to brush until hours later. I know this is totally disgusting, but mornings are insane around here getting two kiddies fed ASAP. I plan to FIX this by putting a toothbrush for myself in our downstairs bathroom so I don't have to make the extra trip upstairs! I have a similar problem with showers but I've been having them at night when Brian is home.

---> I'm excited that Molly is finally watching a show besides Team Umizoomi which drives me crazy. Sesame Street is waaaay better so hopefully I can get her into it and we will at least have some choices. She gets 1hr of TV a day (and some days none)...so it'd be nice to change it up a bit :) She still asks to watch Frozen almost every day but we have mostly diffused that.

---> When I was pregnant, I had moments when I worried about bonding with Baby # 2, but she is such a good baby, so happy, and so beautiful that I have not found myself having too many of those issues. Baby needs are also so basic in many ways. Feed them, hug them/hold them, let them sleep and change them and they are happy (or at least she is!) I love her soooooo much...I mean, look, what's not to love?

---> I am tempted to read the Harry Potter books again even though I've already done so in late 2013/2014...hmm. I am thinking I really need to re-read the Hunger Games too because I don't remember Mockingjay very well and I want to read it again before the movie comes out in November!

---> I am not a fan of my current post-baby body and I can't wait to get back at seriously working on it. I am doing what I can right now, which is eating healthy and walking/light activity but after my 6 week postnatal app't I will get back into running and HIIT/strength training and I can't wait. More on that later :)

---> I look at the clock about 800 times a day and count down the minutes until Brian comes home. If/when he texts me saying he might be late, my heart sinks a little bit.

---> I thought it would take awhile before I got thrown up on and pooped on again, but yesterday both happened, and then Molly also peed on the carpet. Kids are so fun ;)

---> I think I've had more cravings in the past 2 weeks than my whole pregnancy, but I've tried not to give into them.

---> Yesterday we went for a walk to the playground and I felt great for the rest of the day. The fresh air and getting out of the house was amaaaaaazing. Today, it's pouring rain so we're kinda stuck inside...but maybe we'll get out again tomorrow.

---> I felt completely liberated when I got to go to the grocery store by myself for a half hour tonight...and then I came home and found 2 girls asleep on top of Brian (at 6:30 pm which is not a good "nap time" for Molly who goes to bed at 8). I laughed my head off and took a picture which I promised not to post (but believe me, it was hilarious).

---> and now someone is asking me to change Sesame Street to Team Umizoomi. Sigh. haha.

(Also - I wrote this post hours ago and am just getting around to publishing now after my shower ;)).

These confessions might seem a bit lame but they've been on my mind lately ;) Thanks for the entertaining link-up every week, Kathy!!!

5 on Fabulous Friday

Hi everyone!!

I haven't really had the energy or spare time to post on the blog much this week, even though I have a LOT of posts half-written or planned out. I had an incredibly busy last week at work, and then busy times with Molly, a crazy snowstorm on Wednesday (Brian and I both worked from home WITH Molly - busy day), and a lot of sleepless nights due to the baby belly!!  Anyway...today is my last day at work (phew) and after today, I am really going to start pushing for natural labour induction!! (i.e. lots of walking, some spicy food ;), squats/bouncing on the exercise ball, and stair walking!). I'd like to go into labour on my own and have the baby around 40 weeks rather than go too long overdue (says EVERY very pregnant woman EVER). :)

Our current chalkboard message at home :)
I also just wanted to say that I really appreciate everyone's kind thoughts and messages lately as I near the end of this pregnancy - I love the support of the blogworld and I can't wait to share our news with everyone soon! :)

Here are my 5 on this lovely Friday:

ONE

Last poorly edited elevator selfie ever - 39 weeks and new haircut!

TWO

My boss brought us all back these little decorations from Africa this week, which I showed to Molly and she decided it was a hat. She cracks me up.

THREE

I discovered The Piano Guys on Youtube this week and love their videos! I love cello & piano, but the videos too are just really epic - a grand piano on top of a mountain type thing!! Pretty entertaining if you're into stuff like that :) Here's one example:

FOUR

Brian and I used to watch Jeopardy almost every night when Molly was a baby or even before that. I loved it but we obviously got out of the habit once we got a bit busier tending to a 2 year old. We started watching it again semi-regularly and now I find it a nice way to hang out - so I'm thinking I need this Jeopardy app for my phone. I *love* trivia :) We also have Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune for the Wii, which we used to play all the time.

FIVE

This pin made me laugh this week :)

Tuesday's Tot Talks: The hospital bag & Labour playlist

A few weeks ago, I packed (most of) our hospital bag to take to the IWK with us whenever I go into labour. I have to admit, I really do not enjoy this task. It is like packing for a vacation that you don't know when you're going to take (and it's not the most relaxing vacation although it IS amazing and worth it!). I hate that you can't pack everything at once, and you can't (in my opinion/experience) leave all the packing until you are in labour either (especially with a second child). For instance, I am going to need my contacts & glasses...but I use those every day, so I can't really pack them! I also want to bring my pillow from home, but I use that every night. Same goes for the camera which we use... Etc etc.

Anyway, my solution to this problem has been to pack everything I don't use regularly and have a list on my phone of things that need to be packed when it's go-time. When I had Molly, we were in the hospital for almost a week from start to finish, so Brian came home once or twice to pick up a few extra necessities that we had either run out of, or didn't think to bring. I think he will come home once or twice this time around too, just to see Molly or shower at home or something.

I also wanted to mention that I downloaded a great app to time contractions and keep track of them for me - there are hundreds of them for iPhone and Android...it is so nice to be able to see if your contractions are getting closer together and to share this with your nurse or admitting doctor.

1) All toiletries (shampoo, body wash, etc) and I am also bringing make-up and hair products so that I feel like myself after a grueling experience, heavy sanitary pads although they are often supplied
2) Loose-fitting clothing and PJs (yoga pants/sweat pants/maternity clothes), shirts that are easy to breastfeed with, a sweater, nursing bras, loose-fitting underwear, socks, slippers, hubby clothing
3) Your own pillow or whatever you require to sleep well (I am bringing ear plugs too in case there is a lot of noise in the hospital), I am also bringing a microwaveable heating pad that helps me sleep & an extra blanket because I froze in the hospital last time
4) Cell phone and charger (and small speaker if you want to listen to music during labour - see below)
5) Camera
6) Breastfeeding supplies (I have a cover and a nursing pillow, both of which are coming)
7) Hand lotion and chapstick
8) Diapers and sleepers for the baby (required at our hospital) as well as as a "going home" outfit, soother for the baby if you want one, diaper cream if required
9) Baby carseat and blankets
10) Laptop or tablet...you will have SOME downtime unless you have thousands of visitors
11) Snacks for yourself or hubby - our hospital is great with the food but sometimes you just need something quickly
12) Water bottle
13) Some cash for purchases from hospital Tim Horton's etc (unnecessary but we will probably have some on hand)

If you ever read Molly's birth story, you know I was in labour for days, but I am hoping that it goes smoother this time around. I have started making some playlists of songs I want to listen to possibly when I'm in labour or if I need an extra boost during labour. There are many researched benefits to listening to music while in labour, but I didn't do it AT ALL with my first labour, and I don't know why.  I also have a playlist to listen to in the hospital with headphones if I need it to get to sleep or I want to relax etc. Some of this music is the kind of thing that most people wouldn't really listen to in this situation, but everyone has their own musical tastes, right? :)

Here's some of my happy playlist if I need it during labour (this is mostly just familiar music or what I've been listening to lately): - I will likely add more fiddle music to this one :)

Here's the "I need more energy, pump it up!" labour playlist (I need to add to this from workout music in my iTunes):

Why don't they make these kinds of playlists on Songza, anyway? ;)

Any recommendations for me??

Quick weekend recap with some pics :)

Our weekend was pretty good, but a little bit all-over-the place!! In some ways, I feel like we crammed a lot in...but looking back on it this morning, not so much! Oh well!!! It was a good one with lots of good friends!!

36 weeks!
On Friday night, we had a good friend of mine and her boyfriend over for a visit and some board games after Molly went to bed. We played this one again (can't get enough of it!) and enjoyed some delicious homemade popcorn (we have this maker which is awesome!) Everyone enjoyed some beers, and I enjoyed some Italian soda! It was good, if not quite the same as a beer ;)

On Saturday, we were all up around 7 am and Brian let me sleep in/rest until 8! He made us a delicious omelet for breakfast and then he was gone around 9 am to help some friends of ours move into their new house. Molly and I had a fantastic day together and she was the happiest little 2 year old all morning. We sorted and organized a bunch of her toys, and she re-discovered some favourites that she hadn't played with in awhile. We also made a small block castle, painted a card for my grandmother's birthday on Sat night and sorted through some baby clothes. I so enjoyed this time with her, and I told Brian later that day that I felt great after a quality sleep on Friday night and didn't even feel "super pregnant" all day - which was nice!!

My mother in law stopped by for a visit because she is going to sew us some new black-out curtains for our bedroom (since the baby will be sleeping in a bassinet there for a month or two) and a long-lost friend stopped by for a visit too! I was so excited to see her and catch up with her. Sometimes it can be hard to make time to see friends that aren't in the city all the time, but I love it when it works out and you can just chat and catch up on life. We went over to my aunt's house for supper on Saturday night to celebrate my beloved grandmother's 80th birthday!! Molly wore a new dress that Brian's mom bought her at Costco for Easter (I think it's the cutest dress ever!):

We left around 8pm and drove out of town about 45 minutes to our friends' house to visit with another visiting friend and his wife. Brian was overjoyed to be reunited with his 2 best friends (and groomsmen) and they stayed up late playing video games (not me, I went to bed around 12!). It was brutal losing that extra hour on Saturday night, and we all felt overtired after not sleeping well...so when we came back home on Sunday at noon, all 3 of us took a 3 hour nap - there goes our Sunday! haha. We BBQed some homemade lean ground chicken burgers and got our munchkin to bed...then watched a couple ofepisodes of House of Cards and turned in early. The spring time change always leaves me out of whack a bit, especially with the poor sleep on Saturday night and the long nap yesterday...I think I'll be a bit more caught up tomorrow ;)

I have lofty plans for this week, including organizing the baby's room, packing a hospital bag a bit more thoroughly, and doing our income tax return!! If I really get on a roll, I'll make some meals to freeze for the baby's arrival and we want to do a few DIY maternity photos. Here are a few I've seen for inspiration:

We took some great pictures with Brian's cousin when I was pregnant with Molly, but the timing just didn't work out this time around and now we're getting down to the wire. I want to have a few good pictures to commemorate this pregnancy and share with this second child sometime in his/her life and time is running out!!

Any other inspiration for me? :) Hope you all had a great "daylight filled" weekend! :)

Friday's letters

Happy Friday, everyone!! This has been a busy week and I am very glad to see the weekend!! We're looking at above-zero temperatures in Halifax this weekend too, so I can't help but smile at that! Hopefully we'll get some time outside with our favourite little munchkin.

On top of it being a busy week, Brian and I both have this weird affliction which is a BRUTAL cough/sore throat every morning but no other real symptoms (as in, neither of us are really sick, and it's not necessarily getting worse, but it is SO weird!) We are thinking maybe we should invest in a humidifier, but it's pretty humid in Halifax every month except winter...I'm not sure! For me, it has usually gotten better by the afternoon but my throat is perpetually a bit tender.

I have also put on my shirt either backwards or inside out 3 times since Monday. The first day, I noticed it around 10 am. The second time, I noticed it around 3 pm...and yesterday, fortunately, I noticed before leaving the house. Oooops. It was definitely noticeable to someone around me that my tags were on the outside of my shirt...haha.
35 weeks
Today, instead of doing my usual 5 on Friday link up, I wanted to write a post in letter format. I'm sure there is a link up for this somewhere, but I couldn't really find one so I am just doing it all on my own :)

Dear Friday, I'm so happy to see you!!

Dear Brian, please try to take a look at my shirts before I leave the house next week. I hope we kick this throat sickness soon and get to do something fun this weekend. Thanks for your help around the house this week and for playing with Molly a lot so I could get things done.

Dear Molly, I am so happy to see my sunshiney toddler back in action this week after a month of being sick and popping your 2 year molars. Thank you for being sweet and helpful and happy to see me. I love watching your excitement when you feel the baby move.

Dear in-laws, we are so grateful to have you so close by to help out with our little munchkin.

Dear Mom and Dad, I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me on the phone anytime I call, no matter the time change or what you might be busy doing. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD :)

Dear Spring...please come soon!! Molly wants to wear her rain boots instead of her winter boots...and I prefer them too because she can put them on herself better!

Dear daylight savings time, please don't mess with our sleep schedule too much next weekend!

Dear blog readers, thank you for being here and for your lovely comments. I have very much enjoyed getting to know people from all over the place :)

Dear Baby # 2, I seriously appreciate you letting me sleep well most nights this week. Please don't get too too much bigger or I might not be able to bend over at all!!!

Dear February, see ya later, gator!!!

Dear Whitney, thanks for the fun link up on Fridays!! Here's a song that always puts a smile on my face on Fridays.

Friday I’m in Love by The Cure on Grooveshark

Have a great weekend, everyone!!

Dear Molly...

When I was pregnant with Molly, I kept a journal and wrote her a few little letters about how I was feeling and some of the milestones of being pregnant with her (e.g. "I felt you kick today for the first time!" and "I'm in labour with you and it hurts but will be worth it!"). This time around, unfortunately, I haven't had the same diligence in writing about pregnancy milestones, but I have tried to keep track of a few important ones.

Today, I'm turning the tables a bit and writing a letter to Molly as she embarks on her journey of becoming a sibling. I want her to be able to read this someday and know how excited we have been to grow our family, but I also want her to know how remarkably special she is.

*** It is ironic that I had this lovey-dovey post drafted for today, because this child was driving us craaaaazy crying and screaming this morning. She is cutting her last two 2 year molars and she is not always a happy camper these days, so as I was re-reading this, I felt the love again :) ***

Dear Molly,

As I'm writing this letter, you have been on the earth for 2 years, 5 months and 6 days, and you have already made your mark on many lives. When we first found out that we were having you, I honestly had no idea how much you would be loved by so many people. When your grandma met you for the first time, she wanted to call all the newspapers in the world to announce that the world's most beautiful baby had been born. Nurses and doctors in the hospital commented on your beautiful features and mussed up hair. One of the things we love the most about you is your true beauty both inside and out.

I was determined to give you the best that we could offer, which included my intense desire to exclusively breastfeed you as long as possible. That was an uphill challenge, but it was so worth it because I bonded with you in a way that I will never forget. Your dad and I went through a lot of ups and downs in the first months of your birth because he lost his job when you were born. However, we now look back on those days with fond memories because he got to spend 4 months at home with you and me, and he was so lucky to get to know you in your early days. Once you started filling your belly, you were a happy and curious baby, and we loved (and still do love) watching you grow.

At your current age, you laugh more than you cry (most times), and you talk more than you might listen, but you are so smart, and so inquisitive, and you are constantly learning. We love to watch you play, and we love to teach you new things about the world. Each day is exciting with you.

Even before you were born, we knew that we wanted to one day give you the gift of a sibling, but we didn't know when. After we moved into our house, we knew it would be sometime soon because we want you to grow up close to your brother or sister like your dad and I did with your aunts and uncles. We can't wait to watch you become a big sister, and we know you are going to love it. We love watching the way that you carry for all of your dolls and animals by feeding them, rocking them to sleep, singing to them, and telling them stories. You are a very caring girl, and it makes us so happy to see your compassion for other people and even inanimate objects. ;)

I want you to know that the love we have for the new baby will never overshadow the love that we have for you. You have been nothing but a blessing to us, and we are so incredibly lucky to call ourselves your parents. I know that you are going to do remarkable things with your life, and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for you. I can't wait to watch you play with the new baby, and teach them everything you have learned about the world. I know it won't be easy all the time, but it will be worth it, and our little family is going to be oozing with more love than we know how to handle. :)

Be patient with us as we adapt to the new baby, and remember that you will always be our first baby and person who turned us into parents - a role that your dad and I both embraced with open arms. You are the light of our lives, and we love you more than ever.

Love, Mommy (and Daddy, who shares most of these sentiments but is not as sappy) :)

Preparing your toddler for the birth of a new sibling (Tuesday's Tot Talks)

After having Molly, Brian and I both knew that we wanted another baby someday, but we took our time to figure out when would be best. We were overjoyed when we found out that a new baby would be joining our family and we couldn’t wait to tell Molly. At age 2 ½ (almost), I don’t think she 100% understands the idea of a new person in the family, but she is a VERY adaptable child and we aren’t too worried about how she will do when the new baby comes. I know there will be some good days and bad days, and some adjusting for all of us, but Molly loves babies and loves to talk to the baby in my belly all the time. She truly (so far) seems excited about it…but I don’t think she fully understands the baby’s permanence in our lives ;)

My current "baby" ;)
There are moments when I wonder as a mother how I can love another child as much as I love Molly. As our first, she will always hold that special place in our hearts because we’ve loved her longest, but I know that the new baby will make our family so special and I can’t wait to give Molly the gift of a sibling (a relationship that I have benefited from having for most of my life.)

We have brainstormed a few things that we can do to ease this transition for ourselves and for Molly too, and I wanted to share these ideas because I know this is an event that many parents encounter at one point or another.

Here’s what we’ve been doing during my pregnancy to help Molly understand the changes that are coming:

  1. I encourage her to touch my belly and feel the baby move
  2. I encourage her to talk to the baby and “introduce” herself
  3. We have told her about events going on this summer (such as a Raffi concert in June) that we will be going to with her without the baby, but we’ve also been talking about things that we will do with the baby once s/he is here
  4. Molly has a few "babies" of her own and she loves to care for them
  5. We have a few books that we've read with her about being a big sibling and welcoming a new baby
  6. We have pointed out other groups of siblings that we know
Here are some plans we have for when the baby comes:

  1. Closer to my due date, we are going to take Molly out to pick out a present to give the new baby from herself.
  2. We are also going to be giving her a small present when I go into the hospital and she spends time with my in-laws
  3. We have a couple of little “new” toys on hand for Molly for the weeks after the baby’s birth when the baby will be getting a lot of new presents from visitors
  4. We plan to let Molly help with certain baby activities (I know she will LOVE this) such as bath time, picking out clothes for the baby to wear for the day, and reading the baby stories or singing to the baby
Additionally, I have heard that it can be a good idea (as the mother) to ensure that your husband is holding the new baby or that the new baby is in the bassinet in the hospital when your oldest comes in to see you for the first time (so you can focus all of your attention on your oldest child for a few minutes after possibly not seeing them for a day or two).

Having a dance party
We are fortunate in that Molly feels very close to a large number of different people – she is very close to my husband, to several of her friends, to my in-laws, my parents/siblings and a few extended family members. She will easily spend time with these people without clinging to me, and I know that she will be excited for all the visitors that we see after the baby’s birth (for instance, my mom is coming out for 2 weeks from Calgary and Molly is SO excited). I am so glad that we have helped Molly to nurture these relationships and spend time with other family members, because I think it will make it easier for her to adjust.

Our only other worry is that Molly’s sleep will be disturbed with the new baby waking up in the night. There is really nothing that we can do to prepare for this, and we are hopeful that the sleep disturbance will be minimal. The baby will be sleeping in our room for a few months, so hopefully Molly won’t hear him/her crying in the night too frequently.

Tuesday's Tot Talks - Trying for a VBAC

Before I jump into today's Tuesday Tot Talks topic, I wanted to share that yesterday marked the anniversary of the coldest day ever in Canada which took place in Yukon in 1947. On Feb. 3, 1947 it was -63 in Shag, Yukon. I can't even IMAGINE that!! The Google doodle celebrated(?!) it yesterday. Brrrr.

Today I'm going to be talking about something that's a bit personal, but also (in my mind) important...and it's also something that is on my mind a lot these days being 8 weeks out from the approximate arrival of Baby # 2!!

36/37 weeks pregnant with Molly in 2011
3 years ago, When I was pregnant with Molly, one aspect that I always worried about a bit (like many other pregnant women) was the uncertainty of labour and delivery. It bothered me that I would have no idea how it could go, or how long it could take. There was never any guarantee that everything was going to be OK, even though I knew I had excellent care and a wonderful hospital. Even if I had made a detailed birth plan (which we really didn't), it could have still gone the way it did. I hated not knowing exactly when I'd go into labour, and how I would react to the pain, and how everything would progress. For someone who likes to plan ahead a bit, this aspect of childbirth was a bit intimidating and almost frustrating (but also exciting! So many mixed emotions!)

As I mentioned in Molly's birth story, I had an unexpected emergency C-section in order for her to enter the world (after 44 hours of intense labour and being completely sick to my stomach). There was really no way around it, and I don't dwell on it or feel (very much) like I missed out on anything by not having a normal delivery. It just is what it is, and I am grateful each and every day that she and I both have our health.

However, this time around, I had to make a choice. Would I try to go into labour on my own, and try my best for a "normal delivery", or pre-book an elective c-section? I knew even before we got pregnant that I wanted to try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).

Here are my reasons:

1) Although I had a relatively quick recovery after Molly's birth, it was still not easy. If possible, I would like to avoid having major abdominal surgery again. This is primarily because, if I do have a repeat c-section, I will be unable to drive for 6 weeks, or do any heavy lifting or anything strenuous (like lift my 2 year old). When Molly was born, Brian was unexpectedly off for 4 months so I don' think I noticed these aspects of recovery as much as I would this time around.

2) I would like to spend less time in the hospital after the baby's birth. With Molly, we were there for a week, and I would like to be settled in at home with my toddler and new baby a bit sooner this time.

3) I would like for Brian to experience the baby's birth in a way that wasn't entirely possible with Molly, and I would like to experience it myself. I would like to be able to hold the baby immediately after s/he is born (truth be told, I was able to hold Molly pretty shortly after, but I was struggling with recovery and being assessed around the clock for my own health).

4) I want to be able to  get back into regular exercise soon after the baby's birth. It will be summer time, and I'd like to take advantage of the nice weather and work out in the backyard, etc. etc.

I am going into this knowing that there is a definite chance of a repeat c-section, and I am okay with that if it is the only option at the time. There's no point in stressing over it, but that doesn't mean that I am not going to try my best to be strong during labour and hope for a different outcome. Overall, the most important thing in all of this is having a healthy baby, and I know that if I have another c-section, I will still recover fine and be back on my feet soon afterwards. If I end up having a c-section with this birth, and we decide to have a third child someday, there will be no choice (you usually cannot try for a VBAC after 2 c-sections).

So far, I have had a very healthy pregnancy and the baby is in the right position for birth (although that could change). I have tried my best to remain active (and it helps to have an active toddler to chase around!) and maintain my own health. My doctor says that there is no reason why I cannot try for a normal delivery, and she herself has experienced many VBACs with women who have a similar background to mine. Knowing all of this gives me hope that it can happen.

I want to mention that I'm not writing this in judgment of anyone who might decide to go the route of an elective c-section, because, as I said, the baby's health is the most important thing, and it is a very personal choice. I also know that many women experience a successful VBAC after consulting with a midwife and having a completely natural birth, but this isn't part of my own plan for various reasons.

In case anyone else is in a similar situation, here are some resources I have turned to in order to best prepare myself for this labour and delivery (believe me, there is TONS of information out there!):

Have you ever been in this situation? Any labour advice for me? :)

Tomorrow I'm linking up with Haley at Truth be Told for her first link-up and it's a good one! It's called "I love him, but...." and it will be about something that your significant other does that makes you a little bit crazy. Haha. I love it! Check it out if you can think of anything that yours does that drives you crazy (and I'm sure you can think of at least one thing, all in good fun!)

Five on *Finally* Friday :)

Happy Friday!! Is it just me, or has this week taken forever to get to Friday? Some weeks are like that, I guess. I can't wait for the weekend to get some housework done and catch up on sleep. We don't have many plans besides GETTING haircuts (me and Molly), going to see some friends out of town overnight, and taking it eaaaaaaasy. Can't wait.

Linking up for 5 on Friday again today :)

If you want to read other's posts, you can check out the link-up with Darci, April, Natasha and Christina.

Here are my 5 things for this week to share with you all:

ONE
We've had unseasonably warm weather this week in Halifax, but also a lot of rain. All this little munchkin wants is for it to snow again so she can wear her new scarf that my aunt knit for her:

TWO
I started The Book Thief this week...so far it is really intriguing! I'll share all my thoughts on it when I'm done, but I heard the movie wasn't really great - has anyone seen it? So far, I find it really interesting that Death narrates the book. I don't usually go for war-era books, but this one comes soooo highly recommended that I'm going to give it a shot :)

THREE
A few helpful links I've come across lately (I realize this makes this post more than 5!):
A) Apps to check out in 2014
B) Web-writing tips to improve your blog posts
C) A blog-planning template

FOUR
A fun Twitter account to follow if you are a fan of Harry Potter, and another one if you like the Hangover. And, a funny tweet that I saw on Pinterest this week:

FIVE

29 weeks and feeling pretty good! The time is flying by until we welcome a new baby into the world!! Can't wait. (Please excuse the bathroom picture!!)

Shirt is from H&M maternity, link no longer available online

Hope you all have a WONDERFUL weekend!!!
