Friday's 5 - my first of 2014!

I love this link-up because it gives me a chance to a) make a list, which I love to do and b) share random things that might not fill out a whole blog post but are still interesting and worth sharing!

If you want to read other's posts, you can check out the link-up with Darci, April, Natasha and Christina. I always find some interesting new blogs to follow and I love reading other blogger's 5 things!!

This week, I wanted to share some interesting links that I came across in the past couple of weeks.

ONE

I came across this health manifesto from Greatist.com on Amber's blog last week and I think it is a cool thing to print off and remind yourself about where you're going this year!

TWO

Over the holidays, I did some yoga videos and Molly "did yoga" with me (AKA she jumped around and pulled the mat out from under me even though she had her own mat! ;) haha). I came across a toddler yoga video HERE that I'm going to try with her sometime!

THREE

I enjoyed THIS set of tips for being healthier this year. Quite a few good tips. Thanks, Buzzfeed. :)

FOUR

Helene over at Helene in Between polled her readers about the best blogger of 2013 HERE and I found a few new blogs to check out from the comments section! The winners were announced on her blog on Wednesday...you can see the winners HERE.

FIVE

This is a cool approach to New Year's resolutions that you can fill out, print off and glance at throughout the year.

What are your 5 for this Friday??

A delicious protein pancake recipe

I'm an avid follower of the blog Peanut Butter Fingers, which is updated at last once if not twice a day with great workouts, general friendly tips and amazing recipes. Julie posts what she eats a lot, and I have gotten some great ideas from her posts! She has been posting about protein pancakes for awhile, but I wasn't sure how easy they were and I kept putting off trying them out myself. This week, I decided it was finally time to give them a go. You can find her original recipe HERE, along with some other pancakes recipes here but I modified the recipe a bit based on comments on her blog.

I was actually amazed at how easily the pancake flipped because I was certain it would be like an omelet and fall apart. This breakfast was a huge hit with my family too, and it reminded me a bit of French toast because of the eggy taste. The consistency is more like a pancake though. It is very filling and pretty healthy, so I plan to share it with everyone I know! It is also VERY quick in the mornings and I've had it 3 times this week already!!!

Give it a try and let me know what you think! Thanks to Julie at PB Fingers for the great recipe!!!

PS - I actually think these might save well in the fridge/freezer and reheat, but I haven't tried that yet!!

Eating well and exercising during pregnancy

It's no secret that many women struggle to maintain the same activity levels and keenness towards healthy eating during the 9-10 months of pregnancy. I, too, have struggled with this. During my first pregnancy, I basically just embraced the concept of "eating for two" and I didn't exercise nearly as much as I should have. My main form of exercise was walking, which I tried to stick to at least 4 times a week.

This time around, I was armed with a better plan for eating and a plan for exercising and I have to admit that it has fallen to the wayside a little bit, but that I am still doing better than the first time around. Not surprisingly, I am finding my belly growing at a much quicker rate than I did during my first pregnancy, and I am also finding that I am significantly more tired due to more family responsibilities and a bit of a longer commute to work.

In the past few weeks (over the holidays), I definitely slipped up on healthy eating more than I intended to (I think almost everyone can relate to this, though). However, I got in more exercise than usual as well. We spent a lot of time outdoors with Molly, and a lot of time walking. I did yoga and some indoor biking and a bit of strength training too.

Here are some suggestions I have for eating during pregnancy:

1) Incorporate 5-6 small meals into your day. If I don't eat something small every 3 hours, I am ravenous, and then I eat a huge meal and can barely move afterwards. I suffered through heartburn when I was pregnant with Molly, and it is returning a bit again this time around at nearly 28 weeks.

2) To avoid heartburn, don't drink within a half hour of eating (I find this nearly impossible to do, but I try my best), avoid certain trigger foods such as fatty foods and chocolate, drink peppermint tea, don't change positions while eating (i.e. don't walk around and eat, just sit, take small bites, chew a lot, and then move around a bit after). Here are some other tips, too.

3) Start the day with a glass of hot lemon water. I bought a huge bag of lemons at Costco and squeezed them all into ice cube trays, so I just pop out a lemon juice ice cube, put it in a mug of hot water and drink it before eating anything in the morning. This has MANY benefits including aiding in digestion and re-setting your body each morning.

4) Don't eat your calories instead of drinking. I find it difficult sometimes in social situations because my husband or friends can have a beer or two, and I can't, so I think that I tend to rationalize poorer eating choices or drink choices (i.e. drinking pop which I almost never do otherwise). It's best for me to stick to water and only eat when I am feeling actually hungry.

5) Don't eat too close to bedtime.

Here are a few videos online that I've been using as workouts:

and some great resources for eating healthy and meal planning:

I have had a harder time getting in veggies this pregnancy, and I have been craving carbs almost constantly (Christmas didn't help with that!). I've found one of the best things I can eat is a fruit-and-veggie smoothie as a morning snack or for breakfast/lunch. My go-to (self-invented?) recipe is as follows:

I always have some sort of pureed veggies on hand because I like to make these smoothies for Molly, but you could really include anything you want! I know these are also tasty if you include frozen peaches or mangoes...whatever you have on hand, really!!

Any tips for me? What are your favourite ways to sneak in extra veggies?

14 Things I'm looking forward to in 2014.

Happy new year!!!!

I do have parts of a Christmas recap typed up, but I have been wanting to post this forever as a start to the new year. 14 is my favourite number (I'm so creative - I was born on Aug. 14), so I am pretty excited about the year 2014 which is likely the only 14 year I will see in this lifetime! That being said, there are a lot of things that I'm really looking forward to in this upcoming year.

1) Giving birth to our second child/not being pregnant anymore (this one is a given)
2) The Veronica Mars movie (can't wait, but Brian won't come and see it with me...any takers?)
3) Divergent: the movie (I can probably talk Brian into seeing this one with me because he likes The Hunger Games)
4) Being off work with 2 children for a year (will be nice in some ways and likely overwhelming at first)
5) Watching the hubby turn 30 (he is freaking out about it but I think it will be fun)
6) Celebrating my sister's graduation from med school and her husband from law school (and hopefully watching them move to NS!)
7) Seeing my parents and brother in the summer (overjoyed!)
8) Having a raspberry beer (mmmmmmm)
9) Working on my blog (including a blog design and some weekly posts)
10) Participating in a book club: either Bonnie's or Laura's or both!
11) Running a 10K in the fall (this is a goal!) and losing the baby weight.
12) Enrolling Molly in soccer in the summer (Can't wait to watch her play)
13) Reconnecting with friends and family who have or will be moving closer to us
14) Molly's first concert, thanks to Nanny and Papa (a Christmas gift) - Raffi!!

And a bonus one...I am going to be keeping a VERY brief 5 year journal. I saw a book for it at Chapters before Christmas but I will be following the prompts from this site. It is only a sentence or two a day, but you can compare over the 5 years and I think it will be really interesting to see my responses over the next 5 years of changes!!!

Hope 2014 brings joy to everyone!

Weekend 5K Recap & Moving Forward

In case you missed me talking about it last week, I did my first 5K (since having Molly) on the weekend! I've done a few 5Ks before & even a few 10Ks but I was in way better shape (and it was about 4-5 years ago). This particular 5K was a pretty casual one put on by Mountain Equipment Co-op and it took place at a trail system about 5 mins from my house. My main goals for the race were:

1) Finish. haha.

2) Run the whole thing

3) Finish in under 45 mins.

I surpassed these goals, overall! I did walk a little bit, after a big hill, but it was for about one minute/50 m and I needed to catch my breath. It was 30 deg Celsius for the run and I was DYING from the heat. I think my official time was 33:38, and I finished 16/26 runners. This race included a 5k/10k/Half marathon and it was an out and back course, so we turned at 2.5km and ran back the way we came. It was a bit confusing because we all ran on the same course, but those doing the 10K/Half just kept on running when us 5Kers turned around. It was an interesting set-up, and I think it would have been messy if more people had participated in the race. I liked the out-and-back concept because I knew what to expect on the way back. I ran faster than I expected to, and I think it was partially because it was SO hot out that I really wanted to finish and get some water. Haha. Molly and Brian came to cheer me on, which was super nice of them!! I know running a 5K means nothing to some runners, but this one was a big deal for me since I have only been running sporadically lately and it's always been run/walk intervals. I am feeling very able to survive the Natal Day 6 mile run with my Dad on August 5...but gotta get back into training seriously. There's a big difference between a 5K and a 10K!!

Here's a scenic pic that I took during the run (totally passed that girl about 2 mins after this was taken!)

Run

And a pic of the awesome treat from my hubby post-run:

Post-Run

(iced coffee from Tim Hortons = awesome recovery drink? haha)

So, goals moving forward:

1) complete the Journey 2 Wellness 6-week intense challenge that is coming my way on July 8

2) Train hard for the 6 mile (9.6Km) Natal Day Race and finish in less than 1:05

3) Get back into core work and strength training (I have been doing this, but not to my full potential).

4) Tweak my macros and stay on track with my eating as we get into the temptations of summer food/drink consumption

We spent the rest of the weekend taking it pretty easy, but also spent 2 hours on Sunday afternoon in the doctor's office with Molly and her two red & swollen eyes. Turned out to be an eye infection on the tail end of Hand, Foot & Mouth, so the wait in the doc office was worth it...got her on some antibiotic eye cream and she is way better already.

I also finished Inferno by Dan Brown last night and I am itching to get into some other similar books this summer. I loved reading it on my Kobo since Dan Brown's books tend to be BIG, haha. I'll post some thoughts on the book later this week, but I liked it waaaay more than The Lost Symbol. I think Angels and Demons might still be my favourite overall, but I'm not sure. I will probably re-read them all this summer for something to do. I always miss some details because I am anxiously flipping pages to find out what is going to happen next.

That's all for today - but I'll leave you with an awesome little summer ditty :) We saw Bruce Springsteen live last summer and he was AMAZING!!!
