March recap (What's New With you? Link up)

I read something great lately (I can't for the life of me remember where) about perceptions of being busy. These days, when someone asks "what's new" or what I've been up to lately, my default response is to say that we've been busy. And yes, in some ways that's true. I've been busy filling up sippy cups and cleaning up spills and doing laundry and cuddling with a sick toddler and trying to maintain a life for myself and spend time with my husband and see friends and family. But that's just life right now. It's not necessarily busy. 90% of weekday evenings I have nothing planned besides cleaning up, reading, working out or watching TV with Brian, and an early bedtime. I am blessed to have tons of quality time with a lot of the people I love and value the most. I'm really trying to shift my thinking to realize that yes, there are moments when life feels VERY busy (i.e. getting home from work and trying to get supper on the table 10 minutes ago and chopping vegetables while two little people pull on my legs), but I don't want BUSY to be my default answer. I am finding that by saying no to some things, I am able to say yes to things that I love to do.

Anyway, that might not have made sense, but there it is. I'm linking up today with Kristen and Gretchen for What's New With You? and I'm sharing a brief recap of the month of March in the life of Heather :)

March was a great month, and I feel great heading into April...in some ways.

Here are some highlights (in random order):

Lucy turned 2 on March 31 and we celebrated last week on April 1 with family. She is doing great at chattering more now that she has the tubes in her ears (I think) and she is getting along reasonably OK with her big sister. She really enjoyed her birthday and although she hasn't had a chance to try it yet, she seems to like the balance bike we bought her.

I had 2 half-days and one FULL DAY home during the week on my own because I had extra vacation time to use up before the end of March and we have to pay our childcare provider whether the kids are there or not. I got some house stuff done, got a massage, napped, read, etc. It was amazing. Definitely some much needed "me time".

Brian and I finished Love on Netflix and House of Cards season 4 (MUCH better than Season 3). We just started White Collar and I am loving that so far. What's not to love?!

The kids had a ton of trips to the playground and lots of play dates and time with grandparents. We read lots of kid books, made a lot of crafts, and had a lot of fun as a family. We got to spend a lot of time with my adorable baby niece and sister.

Daddy even came with us one time!!

Fun with our umbrellas

Easter was a fantastic weekend full of friends, family, and chocolate. The girls were a great age for egg hunts this year.

Literally the best picture of the two of them out of about 10 choices

I had an awesome reading month which I'll be talking about next week for the Show Us Your Books link up. I really prioritized audiobooks this month and got through a few of them. I also only have one book left (The Nightingale) in my Book Challenge by Erin list. I am really proud of myself for reading some books lately that I might not have otherwise sought out or that have been on my TBR list for a long time. That's what I love about book challenges ;)

I didn't run as much as I would have liked to, but I did make it out a few times at 7 pm because it is light out now at that time! I love it. I am easing back into morning workouts a few times a week, and I'm still really, really loving yoga class once a week but it's obviously not enough.

Here's to another great month in April :)

  1. I read that post about being busy too. Maybe on Modern Mrs. Darcy? That sounds like something she'd discuss. :)

I agree. We have time for the things we make time for. Busy shouldn't be the norm. If there are things we don't want to be doing, we should stop.

  2. Oh how sweet! Happy birthday to Lucy! That does seem like a fun set of ages for Easter egg hunting! :) My husband's cousin's kids were at similar ages and had a lot of fun! I linked up too. Excited to hear about your books. I have mine planned for Monday, but I'll have to link up Tues... if I remember! XO - Alexandra

  3. Busy is my default answer too. I mean, it's true in the way you describe it, but my life isn't constantly busy. I think being "busy" give us a sense of purpose when we tell other people we are busy, you know? For some reason, we've started to associate "busy" with "successful" or a "full life". But ya, I don't want busy to always be my default answer either.

How was the show Love? It's on my list to watch if I can ever get through the millions of other shows I watch, haha!

  4. I really liked your introduction regarding being busy. I always feel so busy even if I'm not actually that busy (if that even makes sense). It's kind of like you said, though: I get home from work and then there are so many things that I want and need to do that sometimes I wind up feeling incredibly busy (even if most of those things are fun like reading, working on blog stuff, hanging out with my husband, etc.). I really just need to be better with prioritizing. That's my biggest issue right now.

"Me" time is so important. I think it's awesome that you made time to put yourself first last month! I'm not a parent, so I can't begin to imagine how much time you devote to your kids on a regular basis, but I do know that my friends with kids who actually take time to do the things they enjoy (without their kids) seem much happier than my friends with kids who feel guilty if they leave their kids with a sitter so they can do something without them.

And speaking of kids, I love the pictures you shared! Your girls are so cute! :-)

I'm struggling with getting my book reviews written for the link-up, but I should have some free time this weekend to devote to that. I used to be really great about writing my reviews almost immediately after finishing a book, but I'm three books behind right now. Whomp whomp.

I can't wait to see what you think of The Nightingale. That was one of the best books I've read so far this year! :-) I'm on my last book for Erin's challenge. I was hoping to finish the bonus round as well, but that's not going to happen. I'm hoping to finish at least a few books that could count for some of the categories, though ... That's better than nothing!

  5. In our "busy" times, I think it's good to journal, blog, notice what we've accomplished and where we spend our time. Thanks for sharing yours!
I think you're ending the book challenge with a bang! The Nightingale is sooooo good.

  7. Glad you had such a great month! It's hard NOT to feel busy but like you, I can't have "busy" as my default which is why I do my best not to have every minute scheduled and take time to do whatever I feel like doing. I love saying no, too.

I did not do well with the book challenge. But congrats to you for finishing!

  8. ooooh i can't wait to hear what you think of the nightingale!! hurry up and read it ;) haha. happy birthday to Lucy, the picture of the girls at easter is so precious and even funnier that it was the best one. i totally know what you mean about saying busy, i always say i am not busy because even though my life is full, i am not busy. but it is a default answer for me when someone i don't know or like very much is asking, hahaha. and yay for me time, it's definitely important! thanks for linking up with us!

  9. Saying no is a WONDERFUL thing to be able to do. A lot of times when we say no to someone, we're saying yes to ourselves.

  10. Heather! It's been forever! Your girls are so big and Lucy! Such a big girl now. I didn't realize she had tubes in her ears. I bet that was a bit rough.. I know doctors are so good at that by now, but I imagine it was a struggle for all of you. Glad to hear things are going well in that department. I hear you about the busy thing. I only have one person hanging off my legs but it always seems like everybody wants my attention, everybody needs to eat.. and by the time I finish 'running' in the gym, showering and plopping down to relax it's after 10. I find i never have time for anything. I need to plan meals even better so that very little time is spent preparing suppers. I would be able to spend so much more time with my family if I didn't have to make meals! Nice to see your face again and to hear how it's all going.

  11. I know exactly where you're going with that Busy thing! I've been running into that thought all over the place lately and I'm starting to think it's a sign. I need to slow down and come up with real answers for others instead of my default busy.

Your time off sounds AMAZING! I'm learning that I need time similar to that every month in order to keep my sanity. My mom was always a fan of giving us "mental health days" when we were growing up and I should have kept that habit up!

So I've never watched House of Cards or White Collar, but I probably should. I've been binge watching Scandal lately. It's literally all I can think about.
